Just to chime in, we also use the Xythos WFS here at the University
of Memphis (https://umdrive.memphis.edu) with great results.  We
somewhat recently migrated the database backend to new technology and
received excellent support along the way.

Xythos WFS talks secure WebDAV and you can map to a drive letter with
the Xythos Client on Windows or connect with OSX out of the box.
