Describe how you measure *both* passively.  For that matter, describe how
you measure either one passively - having done that, you can then use an
active means to measure the other.

(Of course, by the time you reach a Zen-enough mindset that you can measure
either one without measuring it, you won't care what value either measurement
was, and the fact that you get answers without asking the question won't bother
you in the slightest.. ;)
