I think you may have put your finger on the interest in the patent without realizing it - it's not that someone who wants to do actually do such a thing would be interested in the patent, it's that someone who knows that someone else is already doing it would want the patent so they can sue them.
And then we wonder why everything has 'Made in China' on it nowadays.....
