Liberty, Technology, and Prosperity Cosponsored with The Economist CITY SEMINAR Wednesday, October 15, 2003 The Argent Hotel 50 Third Street San FranciscoTurmoil and trepidation have plagued the telecommunications sector over the past few years as markets have tanked with a vengeance. Companies and shareholders have lost billions of dollars as a wave of bankruptcies and business failures has rolled through this industry. Corporate leaders and industry pundits have faulted federal and state regulators for doing either too much or too little to prevent this market meltdown. What could policymakers have done to prevent this catastrophe? What public policy should govern this sector in future? In particular, how should new Internet services and broadband technologies be regulated to ensure market stability. Is another Telecommunications Act needed? A panel of industry experts will debate these issues and answer audience questions.
