Custom rules

Hi All,

    I a newbie to snort. I need snort to log all alerts from only a specific range of IP address to the syslog server. 
If i specify a rule in the snort.conf for the ranges of ip's will i need add anything to the local.rules . If I need to 
specify the rule can you provide me with some examples.
