I think we've already determined, multiple times, the issue can't be
exploited because it requires root and a RedHat system. To the original
poster (maybe I missed this): How do you know they gained root via ping? Are
you sure it wasn't just a trojaned ping and they rooted it somehow else?
Give us detail (unless I missed it.)
